• Good list of "wanted" upgrades for iPhone 4.0. — Most just jailbroken options really. Wait till June!
  The jailbroken community still provides plenty of fodder for next generation iPhone operating systems as this post proves. Most of these updates would be welcome advances. Add a faster processor etc and minimize the limitations re earlier generations and Apple will maintain a winner.

• Microsoft granted an IM – Presence patent 2009 that I'm mentioned in for work in 2004. Shows what's wrong with the system IMHO
  A google search on my name turned up a patent and reference links to the Qzoxy Presence server on Skype which I also blogged about in 2004. Granting a patent to Microsoft in this area seems to have little merit to me. Instead it just suggests corporate and financial power.

• I'll be sorry to see MyBlogLog go – although it never reached its potential.
  I'll be upgrading my blog with the new year. One of the things I'll be removing is the community link elements like MyBlogLog. While I liked it… it doesn't do that much. What I loved was seeing some of my readers appear there each time I looked at my home page. It gave me hope that my blog was worth reading and finding out about some others. Yet it always disappointed. I am starting to get ideas about what will go up… what will be written etc. End of year cleaning and preparation for the New Year.

  I find Facebook increasingly complex although the updates have become more compelling and are much more personal / related to me than the list I'm following on Twitter. Neither site seems to have it right. At least Twitter is simpler. Perhaps the problem is I really don't want to live in any of them… I'd prefer my own place / site.

  I added the Guardian app too. By contrast Autoweek is too expensive! Trial periods will become more important to get the prices up. They are currently not well supported.

• This suggestion on how the iPhone handles signaling is interesting and another reason perhaps for the notification server.

• Another advanced "touch" UI. Now squeeze your phone and launch an app. Or tickle it.
  The advances and the similarities in touch are increasing at a rapid pace. Not sure if polymorphic touch is the right description yet we seem to be going in that direction. When sensors for touch include the whole phone you can select from the back for example without obstructing the screen. Gaming options will increase too. So… with the next iPhone have touch on the back panel (unlikely)… and if it did what does that do for the case market?

  I suggest that + be used for "call requests" rather than geolocation. I like the idea of = instead. There is already a framework around = that could perhaps be adapted.

• Nokia adds navigation to $163 handset headed for India. The proposition isn't going to work with truckies.
  "In order to leverage its brand in developing countries like China and India, Nokia has announced its cheapest navigation phone, which is expected to hit the market by the second quarter of 2010."

  No doubt adding maps to phones is brilliant. Without knowing the specs Nokia's may well come in many languages. Yet I'm not convinced that truckers or taxi's will pay a price premium for it – and in this style of handset (input). So who's it really for? India still has a culture of navigation by nose and mouth. Eg stop and ask – reaching in fact in 2006 when I was here there were hardly any googlemaps etc available. Maps were almost unheard of. Travel remains local etc. No I really see other markets for this phone or type of device. Maps won't come to India until we bring in classifieds and other mashup type opportunities and that defines a different type of phone.

  Samsung got it and Nokia didn't. nada devices are set to steal share from Nokia feature phones next year. Nokia without a touch solution will end up driving a price war. the traditional stick is growing obsolete at all price points.

• Don Norman's says Technology before Market Research – similiar to users can't tell you what they need
  I think his statements are bending it a little. A technologist with no understanding of users, behaviors and a degree of curiosity won't get anywhere. A market researcher with no understanding of technology and what's possible will also always fail. It' part of the reason I like scenarios. It combines the upstream understanding with storytelling that can perfect ideas and convert to simple concepts. It's only done well by people that are curious and inventive. It's also no wonder that rapid prototyping is important too.

• Growth of Cheap Fakes / China Phones continue to cut into Nokia's global market share
  The articles gets it wrong re the impact of IMEI and legal changes. In India today China Phones are being given IMEI numbers for 199 rupees or less and made official. This is nothing more than a small bother and a temporary annoyance for those that purchased.
